Jun 7, 2003 - Smog advisory

Smog advisory in Portland in early June!!! What's that all about? I grew up in this town and have enjoyed the gray skies and the trees and the green and the weather. But this year, we've started the summer off with 100 degree weather and smog!!! We don't get smog here!! At least, we didn't used to.

Too many people have moved here. It's time to move farther north.

Jun 5, 2003 - My daughter the grad

Last night I went to the graduation ceremony for Oregon Health Sciences University to watch my daughter graduate as a new nurse. Very proud making for a happy dad. She even graduated summa cum laude.

Well done, my wonderful daughter!!

Jun 3, 2003 - Working at Moms

My mom is getting older so, every now and then, her boys spend a day at her house working on the yard do all of those things that a 70+ year old lady can't. This last Sunday was one of those days. The results are kind of nice.

The house she's living in was built by my great-grandmother about 70 years ago. Big rooms and built solid. My mom is getting ready to move out leaving the rest of the family to wonder if we're going to let it go out of the family. A question asked my many a family.

Jun 2, 2003 - Who is that driver

So, I'm driving down the highway and run across one slow car holding up traffic. As I pass them, I am compelled to look over at the person to see who it is. Why do I think looking at them would tell me anything? I find I do this with all sorts of "car people" -- who'd drive that type of car, who'd drive that fast, who'd stay in the fast lane when they're not the fast car. It's as if somehow I'm learning something by seeing their face -- that I'd know what type of person acts like this or maybe I'd learn why they act like they do.

Do other people do this? </p?

Jun 2, 2003 - Rings on the Road

It's probably not a big thing on the east coast, but here in Portland Oregon, we point out to our kids the small steel rings that are set into the sidewalk curb. "What do you think those are for", we ask.

They're for hitching your horse.
